Synopsis

Sculpture Picnic Trail
A participatory environmental artwork each August Bank Holiday week-end, including a 'Picnic in Hades'

Between 1994 - 1997 artists from Impossible ran school, play-scheme and public sessions where participants design and construct their own version of a scarecrow from recycled materials. These later mark the specially prepared trail route along which participants encounter art and nature activities based on the elements and our perception of the world - e.g. water-colouring, animal modelling and bread baking on sticks over a barbecue.

As the participants ascend from meadow, through mature beech wood, past sitka spruce to peat moorland, the sun breaks out over heather, rowan and bracken filled views.

Arriving at the picnic area at the ruined farm stead at Hades, people picnic with stew, cakes and tea available in the marquee. Other activities here include live music, the 'Dream Tent' and a tree planting ceremony in a fresh air event for nature, art, and picnic lovers.

Family treasure Trail 1996

A participatory nature trail with events organised by the Friends of Cliffe Wood and Impossible Theatre to engage local residents and consult them over plans for a new Millennium green in the village.

Kirklees Way Quest 1984
The Kirklees Way is a continuous path which describes a circumference of the borough, and spans both its geographic and social extremes.

Kirklees Way Quest was a year long, district wide community and arts event involving a dozen different community groups in a common project.

Batley Carr MOSAIC: Canaries 2000
Impossible co-ordinated the environmental arts projects, while Environmental Concern co-ordinated the parallel environmental refurbishment projects for 'Canaries 2000'.

'Canary Islands' was a small, untended green pocket in Batley Carr, West Yorkshire. It has a rich and intriguing history and is set within a lively community context.

Following a sustained and successful public arts programme, three artists were commissioned to run participatory sessions within the community to produce temporary / permanent public artworks inspired by the context of the site, with the Final Celebratory Event in Autumn 2000.

This was a Lottery funded Millennium Festival project, also supported by Loca and the ERDF Objective 2 programme. Batley Carr MOSAIC is a well established local project serving the neighbourhood of Batley Carr, between Batley and Dewsbury in West Yorkshire. MOSAlC's purpose is to co-ordinate arts projects which involve local groups and residents in creative activities, promote a sense of community, and address social or local issues such as health and the environment.
