Synopsis

A community woodland project which included practical environmental work. School children and families have planted 1500 trees with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers. The events, for families and in schools included:
    > BTCV's "Flying Slug" project
    > Wild About Wilton - guided walks and celebration of the mature woodland at the Bagshaw Museum and Wilton Park, Batley
    > Mountain Community Garden - a 'permaculture' garden has been designed for a site at the bottom of the Mountain, and the Environmental Task Force trainees are creating a stream and pond, while digging a ditch to solve the problems of waterlogging.
The Mountain Woodland Project was a partnership between Kirklees Countryside Unit, BTCV, CHOL Theatre, artiMEDIA, and the people of Dewsbury.

'Chol' is Bangla for the sound of water lapping against the side of a boat.

CHOL is a group of professional artists of varying ages, cultures and religious backgrounds who make theatre and sculpture. We offer community projects and touring performances seeking to develop peace and understanding between people of different racial backgrounds. We have encouraged an understanding of 'wild' areas and an appreciation of animals, birds, plants and insects in the forgotten corners of industrial towns and moorland villages.

All our work is really one continuously evolving artwork which explores the relationships between black and white, country and city, young and old, how we live and how we should live, definitions of the child and of the adult.
