2008
Glacier, a journey through existential fears and desires inspired by personal reactions to the theme of environmental change.
Seven performers dance along the edge of melting glaciers and broken ice-floes.
Dealing with the themes of global warming and environmental change in metaphorical images, Glacier reflects on humanity’s deepest fears and our paradoxical struggles with, for and against nature.
Glacier paints a glistening and sometimes disturbing picture of society reflected on an icy surface that is gradually thawing away, beautifully distorting the mirrored image. Set and performers metamorphose, inspiring and manipulating one another. The audience are taken on a journey through a porous world of ice and snow in which suppressed feelings break through frozen planes, icicles turn into tears and icebergs come crashing down.
Glacier was funded by Arts Council, England; Co-produced by the Mercury Theatre Colchester; Co-commissioned by Southbank Centre, Queen Elizabeth Hall and DanceEast, supported by danceWEB, DanceXchange, LABAN, Jerwood Space and Northern School of Contemporary Dance.
