In Crown Prince, playwright John Godber uses the genteel sport of bowls as the backdrop to a world where the weather is out of joint, and the city of Hull is on the verge of being submerged. The characters move from their fifties, into their sixties and seventies. As the years edge ahead beyond the 2012 London Olympics (which did nothing for Hull), past troubles of redundancy, bereavement, guilt emerge. Bowls clubs shut down and global warming simmers.
Eventually, the bowling green needs artificial resuscitation and barbed-wire goes up as the coast collapses into the sea and their high-ground location becomes the kind of place local refugees are seeking out.
